The first time I read this book, I read it cover to cover in 6 hours and now I have actually just finished reading it for the second time, both times it has totally consumed me and I am struggling to find the words to describe the feeling it left inside me - a gentle numbness, a quiet sadness, and intrigue - such is the intensity of his writing.
It is a gripping read, with the author drawing me in with his story. It’s not very often that reading a book evokes so much emotion in me. With every chapter my heart broke a little more for the little boy who somehow managed to survive the torture of his childhood years. But his experience seems to shape him and he builds the resilience and courage to chose or at least do his best to influence how his story plays out.
But this is not just the story of his childhood even though that could absolutely be a story all of its own. This book is like a 2-in-1 and you had better hold on and keep up as the author takes you on a time travel journey with each chapter jumping between his childhood, forward into the future and back in time, blending historical facts, realism and masterful story telling to tell his story and the story of Terezin and of those people who history would perhaps rather us forget. Finally he leaves us in the present. He left me wondering what’s the next chapter for the tour guide story. I can’t wait to read more and can only hope there will be a sequel.
There is a line in the book that reads,
“I long to be that small, fragile boy once again and know nothing of this” And the way he tells his story, I can’t help but feel I want to wrap my arms around that little boy and tell him you didn’t deserve this. No child deserves this. None of this is your fault and I’m sorry that no one protected you. Who knows maybe he will read this...
I can see that this author has another book on Amazon that is translated in English called Illegals. I have already ordered it and will review once I receive it! In the mean time I highly recommend buying this book... I actually ordered additional copies for Xmas gifts.
